Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm announced Saturday that she has chosen state Sen. John Cherry as her running mate.

Cherry, the Senate Democratic leader and a 20-year legislative veteran, is someone "who can hit the ground running,'' Granholm said, after formally naming Cherry at a Lansing news conference.

Granholm, state attorney general for the past four years, said Cherry brings other attributes to the ticket, including his relationships within the Democratic Party.

Granholm's opponent, Republican gubernatorial nominee Dick Posthumus, last week chose state Sen. Loren Bennett as his running mate.
