Police in El Paso, Texas, say a Mexican man shot to death last month in front of a house was a midlevel official in the Juarez drug cartel.
Officer Chris Mears said Wednesday that police have identified Jose Daniel Gonzalez Galeana as a lieutenant in the gang, which is blamed for numerous killings across the Rio Grande from El Paso in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
Police said they believe a man armed with a handgun approached the 37-year-old in the street and shot him May 15. No arrests have been made.
The Juarez cartel has been in a protracted fight with rival gangs and Mexican federal troops. Last year more than 1,600 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez, a city of more than 1.5 million people.
The Gonzalez killing was El Paso's third homicide in 2009.
