Md. Woman Makes Cancer Claim to Scam Peers

A Baltimore County woman is accused of scamming her former high school classmates by claiming she had terminal cancer and asking them to help grant her dying wishes.

Thirty-seven-year-old Dina Leone has been indicted on theft and conspiracy charges. A judge set bail at $25,000 last week, and she is no longer jailed.

Prosecutors say one of Leone's victims was Jennifer Lasek, the wife of nationally ranked skateboarder Bucky Lasek. The Laseks flew Leone to the West Coast last summer and took her to Disneyland.

Prosecutors say there was "no medical evidence" that Leone was being treated for stomach cancer as she claimed. She sent out pictures of herself with a bald head, claiming she had lost her hair to chemotherapy.

Leone has a criminal history that includes passing bad checks and running a mortgage scam.
