A U.S. Marine (search) died in a vehicle accident while conducting "security and stability operations" in western Iraq, the military said Friday.

The Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (search) died Thursday in the westernmost region of Anbar province (search), the military said. The death was classified as non-hostile.

Anbar includes Fallujah, Ramadi and other places where insurgents are active.

As of Thursday, May 20, 789 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 575 died as a result of hostile action and 214 died of non-hostile causes.

It was unclear whether the Marine's death in Anbar was included in Thursday's toll.
