A man in Australia will spend at least three years behind bars for infecting his wife with the HIV that led to their youngest child's death, the Australian Associated Press reports.

A judge in Sydney sentenced the unnamed man to prison after he pleaded guilty to one charge of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The 38-year-old man infected his wife some time between January 1994 and December 2003. His wife, who was the mother of their three children, found out she was HIV positive after their youngest child was diagnosed with the disease in 1994. The child died three years later from AIDS-related illness.
