A Florida company at odds with Magic Johnson over the use of his name and image on prepaid debit cards is seeking arbitration in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Magic Cards International Inc. claims in court papers filed Monday that it entered into an amended agreement in May 2003 with Johnson's company, June Bug Enterprises, and the firm Global Team One, to market the cards, which target consumers with credit problems.
Magic Cards accuses the former Lakers star of breaking the agreement that gave the company the rights to market, sell and distribute the cards.
Johnson contends the agreement ended and that he has no further obligation, but the alleged breach of contract caused damages to the company, the court papers said.
An after-hours call to Johnson's agent was not immediately returned.
