Lawmakers Call for Probe of U.S. Entry of 2nd Tuberculosis Patient

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers are calling for an investigation into why a Mexican national infected with a highly contagious form of tuberculosis — the second such case this year — was allowed entry across the U.S. border multiple times.

Sens. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said they were disturbed by the reports that the man was able to travel so freely, according to The Washington Times.

Lieberman said he was "disturbed by the apparent poor coordination between [the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and the Department of Homeland Security," Lieberman said, noting that the man was allowed to cross the border 76 times as well as board an airplane "without detection."

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. said he wanted "an explanation" for the allegations, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, called for DHS "to fully investigate this matter."
