A Jordanian court has convicted a man of attempting to kill his sister to cleanse his family's honor and sentenced him to 7 1/2 years in jail.
The court said Wednesday the man stabbed his sister with a knife several times before she managed to escape from the house and reach the hospital for treatment.
The court said the man, whom it did not identify, believed his sister's behavior harmed the family's reputation, but did not provide details.
About 20 women are killed each year in this predominantly conservative Bedouin society by male relatives in so-called "honor killings" for allegedly besmirching the family honor through adultery or having sex outside of marriage.
