WASHINGTON – There's trouble at one of Washington's most picturesque memorials.
A section of the seawall is breaking from the memorial's plaza and settling into the Tidal Basin. The road along the circumference of the property also seems to be shifting, National Park Service officials said.
The memorial itself isn't in danger, although it's being monitored for movement, they said.
The problem at the Jefferson Memorial is not new. The memorial was built in the late 1930s and early 1940s atop pilings and caissons sunk into an artificial mud flat. Engineers have been struggling for decades to keep everything firmed up.
A Virginia-based consultant has been hired to find out what is going on and come up with a way to fix it. A report is due July 10.
