NEW YORK – "American Idol" (search) said Monday it was adding more phone lines for this week's "Final Three" show in an effort to help fans get through to vote for their favorite contestants.
"With the volume of calls this season already exceeding last year's, we felt it was important to give fans additional phone numbers in an attempt to reduce congestion," an official said.
Until now, "Idol" modified its voting procedures only for the finale. The phone lines have been left open longer and, last season, a number of additional phone lines were created for eager fans of Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo in the final show.
Meanwhile, record exec Clive Davis is returning to "American Idol" again this year to give his opinion on the Final Three. Davis, who gushed over Fantasia last year before she was crowned champ, will appear on the FOX show tonight.
Davis heads the U.S. division of the BMG music conglomerate, which has exclusive rights to record "Idol" winners and runners-up.
He has had big hits with Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson, each of whom has sold more than 1 million CDs.
