A Cook County judge has ordered two homeless people held on $500,000 bail for allegedly beating a woman so severely that she lost more than a dozen teeth.

Chicago police say 36-year-old Joyce Burgess and 46-year-old Derrick King approached Jennifer Hall and Joseph Hoffman and asked for cigarettes. After the couple responded they didn't have cigarettes, Burgess attacked Hall from behind, knocking her to the ground.

Hoffman told the Chicago Tribune he came to Hall's aid, and was in turn attacked by King, who also kicked Hall in the head and face.

Police said Burgess and King fled the scene, but were caught minutes later.

Burgess and King are charged with two counts of robbery. King also is charged with aggravated battery

Hall, who has severe head injuries, was reported in serious condition Wednesday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
