Home Depot Inc. (HD), looking to expand its share of the home appliance market, said on Tuesday it will begin selling refrigerators, washers, dryers and other items online.

The world's largest home improvement retailer said more than 1,800 items will be listed on its Web site.

Home Depot launched appliance showrooms in its stores in 2001 and has become the third-largest seller of home appliances (search), based on dollar value, the company said.

In the third quarter, the company's share of the major appliance market rose to 8.6 percent from 6.2 percent a year earlier, based on units sold.

Appliances sold online have the same price as those purchased in the store, the company said. On its Web site, Home Depot advertises free delivery for appliances over $299.

Once an order is placed online, a Home Depot associate will telephone the customer to arrange delivery and complete other details of the purchase, including local sales tax, Home Depot said in a news release.
