A shootout between police and heavily armed bank robbers killed two people and wounded seven others on Friday, police said.

A Sao Paulo state police spokeswoman said 10 bandits armed with machine guns, shotguns and pistols fought with officers after holding up a bank in the industrial suburb of Guarulhos.

An officer and one of the suspects were killed. Five officers and two bystanders — a letter carrier and a college student — were wounded, but none critically, the spokeswoman said.

She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to talk to the news media about the incident.

She said one bandit turned himself in, and eight fled in a getaway car.
