A woman from Hawaii was being treated in a Seattle hospital Thursday after she was mauled by a brown bear in Southeast Alaska.

Ann Scheller, 57, suffered scalp and leg wounds in the attack Sunday in Berg Bay, a small town about 150 miles southeast of Juneau.

Scheller was with a group of hikers on a trail when she got between the female bear and its cubs, according to Alaska State Troopers. The bears left the area after the mauling.

Scheller was flown first to a Ketchikan hospital, then to Seattle for further treatment. She was in satisfactory condition Thursday at Harborview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
