Christmas is pretty inescapable this time of year at the Macy's (search) flagship store on 34th Street in Manhattan. But it's not Christmas enough for some people.
A group calling itself the Committee to Save Merry Christmas (search) accuses Macy's and its parent company, Federated Department Stores (FD), of substituting the phrase "Happy Holidays" for "Merry Christmas."
That's "absolutely incorrect," says Carol Sanger, a vice president at Federated. She dismisses such talk as "an urban legend."
Sanger does say that Federated is eager to please customers whether or not they celebrate Christmas.
But she maintains there's plenty of Christmas in Federated stores — especially at Macy's in New York, where Santaland employs 149 elves.
