A grenade exploded at a shopping area in a town in Indian-controlled Kashmir (search) on Sunday, wounding at least five people, police said.
The injured shoppers were hospitalized and one was in critical condition after the attack in Bhaderwah (search), a town 110 miles northeast of Jammu (search), the winter capital of Jammu-Kashmir state, police said.
The explosion also damaged three passing vehicles.
The attackers escaped, and no one claimed responsibility.
More than a dozen guerrilla groups have been fighting for Muslim-majority Kashmir's independence from predominantly Hindu (search) India or its merger with Islamic Pakistan since 1989. The conflict has killed more than 63,000 people, mostly civilians.
India accuses Pakistan of training and arming the guerrillas, a charge that Pakistan denies.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over control of Kashmir, since they won independence from Britain in 1947. The Himalayan territory is divided between the two countries by a cease-fire line.
