NEW YORK – New York City officials say a grate collapsed at a private school, injuring 34 students.
Fire officials say all but five of the students at the Yeshiva Shaare Torah in Brooklyn were taken to area hospitals. One girl suffered serious bone fractures.
Officials say the students, all girls aged 10 to 14, were lined up on the grating for picture day. They fell about 12 feet to the ground. Police described it as a "sidewalk window well grating" in front of the school.
Buildings Department officials say the bolts were worn and gave way under the weight of the children.
The school is ultra-Orthodox Jewish with about 260 students in grades first through eighth.
School officials declined to comment.
