Grammy Voting Procedure

Entering:
All National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences members (total around 14,000) and record companies are invited to enter recordings for Grammy consideration. The recordings are screened for eligibility and approved by the national trustees. The list may consist of as many of 10,000 entries.

Nominating:
Voting members of NARAS receive a first-round ballot for all categories (barring those nominated by special committees). They vote to narrow the field to five nominees — announced in January.

Final Voting:
Voting members are sent a second-round ballot for the final decision. All voting members may vote in the general categories (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist), but are limited to a specific number of fields (rock, pop, country, r&b, jazz, classical, etc.).

Grammy Show:
The 42nd Grammy Awards will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 23, 2000.
