Girl, 12, Declared Hero for Saving Siblings in House Fire

A 12-year-old Illinois girl was honored Friday with her own day for her heroism during a recent house fire, reports.

East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. presented the girl, Derrionna Adams, with a plaque and declared it Derrionna Adams Day in the city at an assembly for Adams held at her school, according to

"It is not the worlds that you save. It's the deeds that you do," Parks said in honoring the sixth-grader.

Last Saturday, when Adams' house caught fire and flames blocked the stairs so no one could escape, she kicked out a second-story window and gently tossed her 9-year-old brother and 6-year-old sister to safety, reports.

The house was destroyed, and the family still is looking for a permanent place to live.
