No English newspaper has trashed the Iraq war effort with more gusto than The Guardian (search). So it wasn’t surprising when the Guardian’s Washington correspondent, Julian Borger, jumped on the alleged contradiction between the White House and the 9/11 Commission on links between Al Qaeda and Saddam.
Wrote Mr. Borger: “The U.S. commission investigating the September 11 attacks reported yesterday it had found no evidence that Iraq and al-Qaida cooperated in the plot or had any sort of ‘collaborative relationship,’ bluntly contradicting persistent White House claims.”
But the report to which Julian Borger refers was a preliminary staff report, not the opinion of the full commission. In fact, Commission members have disputed the claim that they are at odds with the president on any Al Qaeda/Saddam link.
The Commission’s co-chairman, former Democratic Congressman Lee Hamilton, said of the alleged contradiction between the Commission and the President: “I don't think there is a difference of opinion.”
For the record, Mr. Borger’s newspaper featured a piece on the relationship between Saddam and Bin Laden back in 1999 that began, “Saddam Hussein’s regime has opened talks with Osama Bin Laden, bringing closer the threat of a terrorist attack using Chemical, biological or nuclear weapons…”
The author? The Guardian’s own... Julian Borger.
And that's The Observer.
