Students at Marion County High are mourning the sudden death of a football player who died after collapsing at practice.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports Wednesday that senior lineman Erick Gutierrez was pronounced dead shortly after collapsing on Tuesday evening.
Marion County principal Glenn Tidwell said he was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Hospital in Americus, Ga., after coaches performed CPR.
He said the cause of death would be determined by an autopsy.
The Marion County football team had moved its game against Schley County to Saturday, but the Americus Times-Recorder reports the match has been rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. Friday and tributes for Gutierrez are planned.
Tidwell said Gutierrez played for Marion County all four years and would be missed. He said the teen was an easygoing and well-mannered kid who everybody loved.
