A South Ogden woman has died of rare flesh-eating bacteria.

Sixty-one-year-old Carol Caudill was a cancer survivor, which doctors say could have contributed to her contracting the disease.

They say the bacteria usually only results in a sore throat or skin rash, and nobody knows why it sometimes worsens and starts destroying flesh.

Last year, there were only about 80 fatal cases surveyed in the United States. In Utah, doctors reported seven cases - although that number could be low, one doctor says, because reporting by doctors is voluntary.
