Firefighters battled blazes near Athens and in southern Greece on Sunday and a heat wave prompted authorities to issue fire and public health warnings.

Temperatures reached 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) and were expected to stay high Monday.

The Fire Service said it had controlled a blaze near Marathon, 25 miles north of Athens.

Two tanker aircraft dropping water were used to tackle a fire in the southern Greek Arcadia region.

Municipal officials said dozens of air-conditioned sites, such as gymnasiums and clinics, were open for citizens seeking relief from the sweltering temperatures. In the capital, 26 such locations were available.

The state electricity company, DEH, said it had bolstered the national grid to cope with heavy use of air conditioners.
