Police in the northwestern Louisiana city of Shreveport say a female student was shot on the grounds of a high school and a suspect was arrested.

Police say it happened at 8:10 a.m. Friday at Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport.

Police Cpl. Bill Goodin said the victim, a 17-year-old girl, was shot several times but was expected to survive. Goodin told The Associated Press that the girl told police who shot her. A suspect was arrested soon afterward and was being questioned by detectives.

Officials put the school on lockdown immediately after the shooting and held students in the gymnasium. Goodin said police believe the victim was targeted by the suspect. No other injuries were reported.
