THE RULINGS: New York's high court ruled that the state law allowing marriage only between a man and a woman was constitutional. The Supreme Court in Georgia said a 2004 ballot referendum banning gay marriage was legal.

STATE-BY-STATE: Twenty states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage; 25 states have enacted statutes but not constitutional amendments.

Massachusetts is the only state that allows gay marriage, although Vermont and Connecticut allow same-sex civil unions.

OTHER CASES: High courts in Washington state and New Jersey are deliberating cases in which same-sex couples argue they have the right to marry.
