European Auto Registrations Rise

European new passenger car registrations rose by 16 percent to 1.07 million units in December compared to the same month in 2008, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association said Friday.

In 2009, 14.5 million new cars were registered, 1.6 percent less than in 2008 and 9.5 percent less than in 2007. In Western Europe, new car registrations rose 19.3 percent in December.

New registrations of cars made by Volkswagen rose 2.2 percent in December, while those of PSA Group surged 25.4 percent.

Ford's registrations rose 28.3 percent, though GM's registrations fell 7.4 percent last month.
