A sampling of home energy conservation and efficiency tips from the Alliance to Save Energy:
— Ceiling and other fans cut air conditioning costs.
— Air conditioners with the Energy Star label may run 30 percent cheaper than other machines.
— Close blinds on windows that face south or west during the day to reduce heat buildup.
— To come home to cool rooms, install a programmable thermostat that will turn on the air conditioner at the appropriate time, rather than have it run all day.
— Shift laundry and dishwashing to off-peak energy demand hours.
— Leafy trees or vines around the house, reflective roof tiles and proper attic insulation will reduce heat buildup.
— Clean or replace AC filters every month.
— Replace some 100-watt incandescent bulbs with 23-watt compact fluorescent bulbs for notable savings.
— Keep refrigerator coils clean.
