A train conductor and engineer have died in a freight train crash in eastern Iowa.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway says a Dakota Minnesota & Eastern Railroad freight train struck a group of cars in a rail yard around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Dakota Minnesota & Eastern Railroad identified the conductor as 27-year-old Andrew Reed of Savanna, Ill. The company says the name of the locomotive engineer, who was also based in Savanna, is not being released.

Railroad spokesman Mike Lovecchio says about a dozen empty cars derailed as a result of the accident in Bettendorf. Lovecchio says the railroad will investigate why the freight train traveling on the main line was diverted, striking stationary cars off to the side.
