A Dutch suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway (search) was summoned to court Wednesday for a hearing on whether to prolong his detention or release him.
Authorities led Joran van der Sloot (search), 18, through a backdoor of the courthouse for the closed hearing. He is scheduled to be held until Sept. 4, but prosecutors say they have filed a motion to detain him another 30 days.
In order to extend van der Sloot's detention, prosecutors must offer additional evidence against the teen. It was unclear when the judge would rule.
Van der Sloot was arrested June 9 along with two friends, Surinamese nationals Satish Kalpoe (search), 18, and Deepak Kalpoe (search), 21, on suspicion of involvement in Holloway's disappearance.
The Kalpoe brothers were released July 4 and then re-arrested Friday when a judge ruled prosecutors had enough evidence to hold them for at least eight days while they build their case.
The brothers also were taken to the court Wednesday about two hours after van der Sloot, but the reason was unclear. Their defense attorneys, who declined to speak to reporters, have filed motions challenging their detention.
Holloway, 18, of Mountain Brook, Ala., was last seen May 30 leaving a bar with the Kalpoes and van der Sloot, hours before she was to end a vacation celebrating her graduation. No one has been charged, and extensive searches have produced no sign of her.
