Police say a cabdriver didn't have any Mace or pepper spray when he was attacked by a knife-wielding passenger, so he improvised and sprayed the would-be robber in the face with an aerosol deodorant.
Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the 51-year-old cabbie, whom he declined to identify, picked up the passenger early Thursday morning outside the Grand Victoria Casino. Swoboda said the driver became suspicious when the passenger changed his destination, so he surreptitiously placed the small can of deodorant between his legs.
When the passenger put a 10-inch knife to the driver's neck, the cabbie sprayed him in the eyes, causing him to drop the knife. Swoboda said the passenger punched the cabbie, but did not seriously injure him. He then fled, leaving the knife behind.
