Denise Richards Gets 'Complicated'

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: Just moments ago we spoke with actress Denise Richards. We're sure you've seen the headlines. Richards had a very public and bitter divorce from ex-husband Charlie Sheen. The pair split in 2005 and have two young daughters.

Denise is out promoting her new reality show, called "Denise Richards: It's Complicated."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

VAN SUSTEREN: Great title--"It's Complicated." Who came up with the name of that show?

DENISE RICHARDS, ACTRESS: This wonderful woman at "E." Everybody loved it. It seemed very fitting.

VAN SUSTEREN: Was there a second place?

RICHARDS: I think we had a whole list of names. I do not even know where we were at at that point. But once everyone heard this name, to me and everyone else, this is it in a nutshell of my life and the show, the last three years.

VAN SUSTEREN: It's a reality show. Describe it for the viewers.

RICHARDS: It is a reality show. I pretty much bear all in this show. I am very candid, and everyone will see what I deal with. I am a single mom. I went through a very bitter divorce. I recently lost my mom, and my father lost his wife. So he moved in with me, and we're helping each other. We are trying to pick up the pieces of our life.

And, at the end of the day, despite what people have heard and what has been written about me, I hope people will see that on some level I am very relatable to a lot people who have gone through a divorce and have lost a parent and is raise kids by themselves.

VAN SUSTEREN: Why did the divorce from Charlie Sheen go so off the rails.

RICHARDS: I went to New York last week to promote my show, and started with "The Today Show" with Matt Lauer, and was blindsided by a statement that he came out with and an email that I did not write.

The shame of it is that I am trying to promote a show, and had I said something about Charlie for him to respond with a statement, I would understand. But I have not talked to the press much in the last two to three years, and I wanted to keep it about that.

And never once did he even mention our children. It is all about what he can do to try to discredit me and sabotage my show. And I just want to move on with my life and move on from that situation and move forward. And it is a shame.

VAN SUSTEREN: There is so much divorce in this country. Why is it that people fall madly in love, and then all of a sudden it is over? What happens?

RICHARDS: Well, in my situation, we are so opposite. We have different views on life and raising children, and there was no way we would have made it work.

But the thing that I do not understand is that there are our girls, and I don't understand why he cannot put whatever feelings he has about me aside and focus on the children did. They are the ones that are going to be affected by this. They are the ones that are going to suffer from it.

RICHARDS: You know, I can't even begin to think how he is. I am sure he loves them as much as he can. I don't understand the way he is. I don't understand the things he says. And we are very different people.

VAN SUSTEREN: In the reality show "It's Complicated," we are going to get to see a real slice of your life. And I am trying to think. You loved him, and you divorced him. How do you feel about him now?

RICHARDS: About Charlie?

VAN SUSTEREN: Yes.

RICHARDS: I really, truly do not know this person. I am said this is the way it is. He is their father. Again, it's about the kids, and I wish he would not say things. I wish he would not air dirty laundry. I wish he would not say things that are not true.

But everyone was so surprised by the last couple of days and last week, different things coming out. Honestly, I have dealt with this since my divorce, and it has been three years, and I am used to it. But it is never ending.

VAN SUSTEREN: "It's Complicated," your brand new show, 10:00 p.m., Sunday nights. Are we going to see you dating?

RICHARDS: I do go on a date the first episode, and it does not turn into a second date, although he was a very nice guy. I am actually fine with being single right now. I have been through a lot. My girlfriends and my sister are really trying to push me into dating. But I am really uncomfortable dating. I have a hard time with it. It makes me nervous.

VAN SUSTEREN: It makes you nervous? Why? Everybody does it at some point in their life. You have done it before.

RICHARDS: Yes, but I don't like it.

VAN SUSTEREN: How do you get from no dating to a relationship?

RICHARDS: I don't know. That is probably why I am single right now.

VAN SUSTEREN: How about having cameras at home? Is that awkward?

RICHARDS: At first, it was awkward. But we have such a great crew and a great group of men and women. And we have actually become friendly with them.

And my daughters don't even say anything about it. They are in the show very little. They love that there is people here with the craft service and the food, the people with the food.

VAN SUSTEREN: Charlie Sheen did not want the children in the reality show, did he?

RICHARDS: At first when I approached Charlie with the show he was fine with it. He signed a waiver that I needed for the show, and then changed his mind. And then it turned into what it turned into.

But they are in it very little. I wanted to try to keep it real. And I have kids.

But after everyone saw the first episode, everyone kept asking me are the kids going to be in a more? We are filming slice of life with them, and they are having fun. And the minute they don't, then the cameras won't be there.
