Pat Tillman (search), the late NFL player who died while on duty in Afghanistan, was awarded the Silver Star last week for heroism under action.
Is there an American anywhere who cannot appreciate the ultimate sacrifice made by Corporal Tillman? The University of Massachusetts in Amherst found such an American and gave his views full lineage in the student paper.
Rene Gonzalez, a grad student at the University, who also works there as a minority adviser, wrote that Pat Tillman: "Was a 'G.I. Joe' guy who got what was coming to him… He wasn't defending me, nor was he defending the Afghani people. He was acting out his macho, patriotic crap and I guess someone with a bigger gun did him in."
The paper received so much negative e-mail in response to the article that their Web site crashed.
The student government association called on Gonzalez to resign from his campus job. They also criticized the decision to publish the article when the editors had plenty of other editorials to choose from.
But the Daily Collegian stands by its decision, saying: “we felt that Rene [Gonzalez’s] voice was one part of the national debate… and that view deserved to be aired.”
And that’s the Asman Observer.
