A lawyer says day laborers sued a Southern California city over a ban on seeking work on the street.
Belinda Escobosa Helzer, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Southern California, says the lawsuit alleging the ban violates the civil rights of workers was filed Tuesday against Costa Mesa in U.S. District Court.
It's the latest in a series of lawsuits filed by day labor advocates against cities that limit workers' right to solicit employment on street corners.
The lawsuit comes after Costa Mesa police posed as employers last year and arrested a dozen laborers.
Day labor advocates say they have seen more American citizens lining up at labor centers around the country because of the recession.
A voicemail message seeking comment was not immediately returned by Costa Mesa's city attorney.
