A man fatally shot a Butler University (search) police officer during a confrontation Friday outside a school fieldhouse and fled on foot, authorities said. Police later shot and captured the suspect.
Hundreds of officers conducted a nearly three-hour search before finding a man who matched the gunman's description about 10 blocks from where the Butler officer was shot, police Sgt. Steve Staletovich said.
As police closed in, they shot the suspect, but authorities did not immediately disclose how seriously he was injured.
The officer, James Davis, was shot once in the head at the school's Hinkle Fieldhouse (search) and was pronounced dead soon after being taken to a hospital, Staletovich said.
The officer was called to Hinkle on a report of a suspicious person in the building as the Butler women's basketball team was practicing, Staletovich said.
The man was outside the building when the Butler officer arrived. Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot, then seeing the man pick up a gun and run away, he said.
Staletovich said he did not know what the man was doing inside the fieldhouse that prompted the initial call to police.
Davis, 31, had been a member of the school's 16-person police force for less than two years, Staletovich said. He was married and the father of three children.
Butler University is a private school of about 4,300 students.
