Common Sense: The Courage of Your Convictions

I recently got an e-mail from a viewer in Hawaii.

"Jay" writes:

"Aloha, Dear Mr. Pollyanna... Eventually, your economic predictions will be correct. However, in the meantime, you are a phony... I don't think you are very qualified to host a business oriented show. I think you stink more than the rest."

Well, you know, Jay, I think you stink. Not because you criticize me — lots of people do that and I have no problem with it. But most people have the guts to put a full name and town with that. They say what they mean and they mean what they say. Yes, they can be mean, but they are honest.

I admire that.

I don't admire you.

I have read your rambling musings about Fox people. Hiding behind an alias and blasting away.

You usually judge some of the women here by the cut of their skirt, not the quality of their commentary.

You are often rude. More often, vulgar. And, you are annoying. You call me a Pollyanna and a phony. You've called some of my colleagues worse.

Again, that’s your right. Buy you should stand by what you say and have the courage you demand of us, you can't even muster for yourself.

Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. You're a worm and a smarmy, pitiful one at that. You have a right to be a worm, of course. And you play the role brilliantly. You have a right to blast my colleagues and me as well. And you do that very well. I just don't think you'd have the guts to do it in person.

You're probably one of those pathetic losers at cocktail parties who laughs and backslaps folks, then rips them apart when they're out of earshot. I avoid people like you because I hate people like you. No, you don't have to agree with what I say. But you should have enough confidence in yourself to stand behind what you say.

You don't. You're a wuss.

I don't really hate you, Jay. But I do feel sorry for you. You call me Pollyanna because I insist on focusing on the good. You are wrong. When it comes to you, try as I might, I can't find any good.

Aloha, Jay.
