Celebs Go Bust: Entertainment Lows in '04

It was a year of weddings, stripteases and hype that didn't amount to anything ... here's a look at the entertainment busts of 2004.

Boobs of the Year: Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

She said it was a planned “costume reveal” that wound up to be a "wardrobe malfunction," but nobody believed her. He said he had nothing to do with it, but apologized anyway so he could go on TV and win some Grammys. Whatever happened, the Nipplegate scandal during the Super Bowl that gave the world a peek-a-boob at Janet Jackson’s breast will go down in entertainment infamy — and everyone silenced by the 5-second delay is paying the price.

Britney Gets Hitchneyed — and Splitneyed — and Hitchneyed Again

It was a year of weddings for Britney Spears, who married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in a Vegas wedding in January “just for the hell of it,” and had it annulled 55 hours later. Her second marriage, to backup dancer and father-of-two Kevin Federline, has lasted a little longer, but Brit-watchers are just waiting for her to say, "Oops!... I did it again."

Ashlee's Lip Stink

OK, so they played the wrong song — that’s no reason to do a weird jig and skulk off the stage on live TV! And not only did Ashlee Simpson reveal to the world that she was lip-synching to a backup track on “Saturday Night Live,” she also proceeded to blame everything from the band to acid reflux disease. Then again, she's only 20 — and singers use backup tracks all the time. But it was definitely embarrassing.

'Desperate' Stunt

“Desperate Housewives” star Nicollette Sheridan stunned viewers of “Monday Night Football” in a racy intro to the game that showed her in the locker room, wearing only a towel, provocatively asking Philadelphia Eagles player Terrell Owens to skip the game for her — before dropping the towel and jumping into his arms. Some deemed the opening too sexy for primetime TV; others went as far as calling it racially offensive. Ratings for “Wives," however, only went up.

Tara Reid's Costume Reveal

Hard-partying B-lister Tara Reid followed in Janet Jackson’s footsteps at P. Diddy’s star-studded 35th birthday party — but this time it really seemed to be a genuine wardrobe malfunction. Smiling away for photographers, Reid appeared not to know that she was spilling out of her sexy black dress, revealing not only her breast but also what appeared to be a plastic surgery scar. Ouch.

'Friends' Finale Hype

With all the fuss over the end of “Friends,” you would have thought the nation was going to quit watching television after the final episode. But really, the show was on its last legs, the last season was a rip-off as far as the number of episodes shown and the last show was a disappointment. At least Ross and Rachel are together forever in TV Land.

Star Jones' Wedding

Ah, a wedding — a beautiful occasion to celebrate love and commitment. But Star Jones defined the word “Bridezilla” by exploiting her day to her advantage, getting “sponsors” to pay for "The View" co-host's nuptials in exchange for the publicity they would receive. A great business deal for all involved, but a little tacky.

Too Much Jude Law

Want to see an ’04 movie? Let’s see … you have “Closer,” starring Jude Law. “The Aviator,” featuring Jude Law. “Alfie,” starring Jude Law. “I Heart Huckabees,” “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” … you get the idea. Hey Jude, you’re handsome and talented, but maybe take on a lighter workload next year.

Celebrities on the Stump

Everywhere you looked, there they were. Leonardo DiCaprio, stumping for Kerry. Jon Bon Jovi, rocking out for Kerry. Bruce Springsteen, born to run for Kerry. Barbra Streisand, Ashton Kutcher, Ben Affleck … while we appreciate the effort to get out the vote, especially the youth vote, many people wish celebs would stick to what they’re good at — performing — and leave the stumping to the politicians.

'Alexander' the Not-So-Great

It was billed as a masterful, swashbuckling epic … but it wound up to be a flop. Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie were ridiculed for their performances in this Oliver Stone biopic, which focused on the Macedonian conqueror’s rumored bisexuality and reportedly had audiences laughing at the serious parts.

And Finally ... 'Catwoman'

It was supposed to be a great feminist comic-book movie and a star vehicle for Halle Berry, but it proved to be neither. “Catwoman” got dissed by critics, viewers and comic-book fans alike, and Berry continues to descend from Oscar-winner to poor script-picker.
