California Body Surfer Slammed Against Rocks, Killed

A body surfer has been killed after being slammed against rocks by giant waves in Newport Beach, authorities said.

The Orange County Coroner's office has identified the man as 50-year-old Monte Kevin Valantin of Lawndale.

Jennifer Schulz with the Newport Beach Fire Department says Valantin was pulled from the rocks by lifeguards at about 1 p.m.

Schulz says he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Waves 15 feet and higher have been reported at the Wedge in Newport Beach and a rip current advisory is in effect at all Orange County beaches.
