Calif. Firefighters Make Daring Rescue of Hikers Who Slid Down Icy Mountainside

Three hikers are lucky to be alive after sliding several hundred feet down an icy California mountainside, reports.

The TV station says the three unidentified hikers were trekking Tuesday through the San Bernadino Mountains in Running Springs , Calif. , when they slipped and slid down an “ice chute,” where a mountainside stream had frozen.

One hiker was able to climb to safety on his own, but one of the emergency responders, a Santa Barbara County firefighter, also slipped on the ice and had to be rescued, along with the more seriously injured hikers, according to

The overnight rescue lasted more than 8 hours, and once saved, the hikers and firefighter were treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, reports.
