A U.S. Border Patrol worker has been arrested in Escondido following a hatchet attack that left a couple seriously injured in their home.
Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin says 33-year-old Gamalier Rivera was arrested Thursday after officers found him near a pay phone with blood on his clothes.
Police say an assailant wielding a hatchet broke into the home of the couple, injuring the leg of a 21-year-old woman and striking her boyfriend in the neck and torso. He is in critical condition.
The motive for the attack was not known, and police could not immediately say what Rivera was booked for.
Border Patrol spokesman Richard Smith confirmed Rivera works for the agency but would not specify his role.
