MAKHACHKALA, Russia – Two bombings hit a police convoy Sunday in a town in southern Russia near Chechnya, leaving an unspecified number of dead and injured.
The blasts -- coming on the same day as Russia's presidential elections -- came in quick succession in Khasavyurt, near the Chechen border, according to the police press service for the Dagestan region.
It said casualty figures, and the reason for the attack, were not immediately clear.
Dagestan is plagued by violence linked to criminal activities and insurgent activity that has spread from Chechnya. Bombings against police convoys and other representatives of federal authority, once common, have diminished in recent years.
