The body of a 9-month-old baby boy was found washed up among the wreckage of a truck crash in a California canal

Volunteers discovered the body of the baby, John Uaisele, in a pile of debris on the edge of a flood-control channel Thursday, according to KTVU-TV in San Francisco, four days after authorities called off their search.

Police said the boy and his family were driving past the Damon Slough along a rainy interstate highway Saturday evening when a limousine hit the back of their pickup truck.

Petelo Uaisele, the baby's father, lost control of the vehicle and careened into the canal. The truck overturned and came to rest on its roof in three feet of floodwater.

Petelo Uaisele died and his wife Mary Uaisele and 1-year-old daughter were injured, according to KTVU. Little John Uaisele could not be found in the debris.

Mary Uaisele said her son was swept away when someone tried to free him from the overturned pickup, but authorities said the boy was not buckled in at the time of the crash.
