A newborn boy, who was badly burned when a fire ignited inside the oxygen hood he was wearing, is out of a drug-induced coma and is breathing on his own, it is reported.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Doctors removed the little boy's breathing tube yesterday and upgraded his condition from critical to serious.

The baby, named Maverick, was burned on his scalp, shoulders, hands and cheeks on Jan. 22, when fire broke out in his open-topped bassinet at Mercy Hospital in suburban Coon Rapids, it was reported.

Nurses immediately put out the fire — but the damage was already done. The newborn suffered second-and third-degree burns on about 18 percent of his body, the Tribune reported.

The cause of the fire, which began inside the oxygen hood, is still under investigation, according to the report.
