Police have apprehended an armed prisoner who escaped from Laurel Regional Hospital early Tuesday morning.

Prince George's County Police say 39-year-old Kamara Mohamed was being guarded by a female Maryland state trooper. The prisoner and the trooper got into an altercation and the prisoner grabbed her gun and fired several shots.

No one was hit, but the prisoner was able to escape.

Police say the suspect was last seen running down Contee Road near Route 1.

Police are stopping cars on surrounding roads to search them.

Mohamed was arrested yesterday on auto theft charges but complained of chest pains when he was being processed. He was taken to the Laurel hospital where he was under police guard before he attacked the trooper at about 3 a.m.
