Alligators in the sewers may be urban legends, but an alligator in Big Wheeling Creek in Moundsville? That one's true.
After a number of sightings, a crowd of spectators managed to nab the 2 1/2 foot long reptile with a net on Thursday night.
Marshall County Animal Control Officer Jim Noice brought the animal to a shelter, and from there the critter will be transported to an alligator rescue agency.
Noice believes the gator was abandoned by a pet owner. While the alligator looked well fed, it would have died when the weather turned cold.
This isn't Marshall County's only gator encounter. A larger alligator was caught in Fish Creek about a year ago.
