A standoff at a Powderly, Ala., home ended Tuesday evening when police entered the residence after firing tear gas and found two people dead.
The bodies are believed to be those of a woman and her husband, who police said shot his stepson earlier in the day and then held the woman hostage. Police entered shortly after 6 p.m.
Authorities were called to the home around 12:15 p.m. on a report of a person shot.
Police found 20-year-old Torrence Felton outside the house with a gunshot wound to the head. UAB Hospital officials said they didn't have a condition on Felton, but police said he was still alive Tuesday evening.
Lt. Henry Irby said a female relative came to the scene and told police her stepfather and mother were inside the house.
Police then surrounded the home and identified the suspected shooter as Felton's stepfather and the hostage as Felton's mother. Police said the man and woman's names have not been released pending notification of family members.
The Birmingham News reported on its Web site that a witness told police the suspect walked back into the house after the shooting. Neighbors reported hearing muffled gunshots inside a short time later.
Police remained at the home all afternoon until firing the tear gas and entering.
