A chaotic series of events that unfolded in Kaufman, Texas, on Saturday led to the death of a nurse who was trying to save her son's teenage friend.
Pediatric nurse June Nalls died in a head-on collision as she rushed her son's friend to the hospital after he'd been shot and wounded by a neighbor.
Pete Frosch caught Nalls' son and a friend cutting through his yard to get to a party, so he grabbed his .38 caliber handgun and shot at them. One of the boys was hit under his arm.
As Nalls, 41, drove the boy to the hospital a car drifted into her lane and struck her pickup truck, killing her, just east of Kaufman.
A Kaufman County sheriff's spokesman says the shooting victim was taken by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and was in stable condition.
Police said the 15-year-old was struck beneath his left arm by a shot fired through the front window of Frosch. Police said Frosch, 74, apparently fired because he saw someone he didn't recognize a few feet away from his home.
Police say the teens were not committing a crime when the shot was fired. Francis said the case would be referred to a grand jury.
The driver of the car that collided with June Nalls' vehicle was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid.
