A fire in a research vessel off the Louisiana coast was extinguished Saturday, a day after the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 40 people from the ship.

The fire was out at 1:20 p.m. and safety zone around the ship was canceled about an hour later, Petty Officer Susan Blake said. "An over-flight showed no more flames," Blake said.

The Coast Guard would board the ship Sunday to investigate the cause of the blaze, Blake said.

Two men suffered minor injuries fighting the fire that started in the engine room and were transported by helicopter to West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero.

Rudolph Bodden, 50, was treated for smoke inhalation and Joseph Chirinos, 25, for a hand laceration, Blake said. Both men were released.

The rest of the crew was taken from the 175-foot Odyssey Voyager, located 10 miles off the coast, to Fourchon.

It was not known what type of research the crew was conducting.
