3 Die in Accidents on Icy Indiana Lakes, Including 2 Snowmobile Deaths

Published January 14, 2015

Three men died this weekend when they fell into icy lakes in northern Indiana, two on snowmobiles and one on an ice boat.

Indiana Conservation officers say the two Wolcottville men were among four riding in a line across Sylvan Lake. Their snowmobiles broke through the ice and into the water Sunday evening. The other two snowmobiles remained on the ice.

Conservation Officer Rodney Clear says the men were pulled from the water around 9 p.m., more than an hour after they fell into the water.

Clear says both men were taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, where they were pronounced dead.

A 72-year-old man died after his ice boat overturned on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, about 30 miles south of South Bend. His family called police when he didn't return Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters found the boat on the ice, in the middle of the lake. The man fell into the water and was partially submerged when they got to him.
