Police have arrested two people after allegedly finding 13 dead cats and two dead dogs in a home in the Denver suburb of Arvada.

Authorities say 21-year-old Marie Woodward and 22-year-old Joshua Vaughn were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Officers say they discovered the dead animals while trying to serve a warrant for a code enforcement violation on Woodward. Police say Vaughn lives at the home where the animals were found, and Woodward used to live there.

Officers recovered two live dogs and four live cats from the house and took them to the Table Mountain Animal Center for treatment.

Police spokeswoman Susan Medina says authorities are investigating a claim by Woodward that she was part of an animal rescue operation.
