In what's believed to be the only case of its kind, a girl with half a brain has developed the power to see out of one eye as if she's using both eyes, scientists reported this week in the online version of the journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
The right side of the 10-year-old German girl's brain failed to develop in the womb. But experts believe it rewired itself, with nerve fibers meant for the right hemisphere going to the left.
Losing one half of the brain usually means people see only things on their right or left. In this case, the the girl can see as if she used both her eyes.
"Despite lacking one hemisphere, she's capable of living a normal life," said Lars Muckli, a neuroscientist at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, who was part of the team that studied the girl's brain.
Doctors discovered the girl was missing half her brain when she was 3 and started experiencing seizures.
